Why us?

Who we are

We're an international law firm and work with clients all over the world. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. First, you might want to know a little more about exactly what kind of work we do.

In short, we’re a global business offering expert legal advice across a range of key sectors. When a client comes to us, we use our skills and understanding to help them navigate all kinds of legal challenges. Issues like dispute resolution. Intellectual property rights for new technology. Major transactions like buying and selling a national chain of stores. So, wherever you are in the world, you’ll see developments we’ve been involved in. You just don’t know it yet.

Uncover innovation that underpins everything

We work in surprising new ways and leave the traditional behind. We adapt to new technology – and we get out in front of it. We find new ways to deliver legal services such as making complex legal information available in user friendly online formats. In fact, you’ll see our fingerprints all over our industry. For instance, we created an online legal resource hub called elexica, and it’s now been used by clients and competitors alike for over 15 years.

So how does that help you? Well, we take the same attitude to our training. Our unique Compass programme – otherwise known as the Simmons & Simmons trainee skills academy - runs throughout our training contracts, guiding your development with a combination of practical learning, formal mentoring and online tools. It’s the kind of progressive thinking you won’t find anywhere else – not yet, anyway.

Our sectors

To uncover the finer detail, you’ve got to be focussed. Specialists, not generalists. That’s why we hone in on four key sectors. It means we can offer nuanced, engaged advice to our clients, and it means you’ll work with experts in the legal practice areas that will define the future:

Asset Management & Investment Funds

Financial Institutions

Life Sciences

Technology, Media & Telecommunications

Our values

Our hard work underpins our clients’ successes, and in turn, our values underpin our work:

Ambition

We set ambitious goals and pursue them with drive. And when we achieve them, we’re not complacent; we strive for even higher standards.

Challenge

We have an open and supportive environment where everyone can give and receive constructive feedback.

Commitment

We all take ownership to deliver on our promises.

Innovation

Creativity and pioneering thinking are encouraged and supported here.

Responsibility

It’s not just about the here and now. We’re committed to building a stronger firm for future generations.

Collegiality

Working together and embracing diversity creates an inclusive environment where everyone can be themselves.

Put your mark on our culture

You’ll see your work influence the world with us, but you’ll also leave your mark on our rich culture too. All kinds of interests come together here – cricket fans and chess experts, netball players and evening yoga fans – and our social groups and sports teams are always looking for like minds. You’ll find that in our eight networks too, including the LGBT network, the women’s Number One Club, and our International Islamic Community. It’s a vibrant team, wherever you are, all ready to share in each other’s interests and explore new ones.

Our blueprint for diversity

Our progressive attitude isn’t confined to our legal advice. It’s also in the way we attract and foster diverse talent. In fact, we’re renowned for it, in a way you’ll find nowhere else in the legal sector.

We’re the only law firm among the eight Stonewall Star Performers: companies whose consistent efforts for LGBT colleagues see them ranked above the Top 100, providing thought leadership and mentoring other businesses.

Our Star Performers have consistently proved that they can make the world a better place for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people. It is therefore only right that we harness their best practice and commitment to changing workplaces across the country and around the world.

See your influence in the community

Clients come to us for our commitment to forward thinking, and you can expect nothing less in our CR work. Our lawyers take on up to 50 hours of pro bono work per year, providing free legal advice to NGOs, international charities and not-for-profit organisations. That means you’ll see how the world of law supports some extraordinary work, whether it’s raising money for charity or tackling social injustice.

One of our firm’s key CR initiatives, for instance, is our long-running Young Talent Programme. In partnership with Frederick Bremer School in Walthamstow, we take on a group of twelve disadvantaged Year 10 students each year, giving them work experience, mentoring, skills workshops, and the chance to understand the diverse career paths open to them. In Year 13, we then offer annual bursaries, helping these young people access university.

The Young Talent Programme takes able young people from Frederick Bremer School and trains them in the skills and aptitudes needed to thrive in an intensely competitive professional environment. The Simmons & Simmons partnership has transformed our practice, and inspired our pupils.
