How to get started & what we look for

You’ve uncovered our world. Now find out how to be part of it. Here, you’ll find out everything you need to know on how to apply, when to do it, and what you can do to make your application everything it should be.

We’re looking for future lawyers who look a little deeper; who see the intricate legal details that shape our world, and who pursue their ambition to be part of that.

That means, we’ll usually look for outstanding academic performance as a baseline. Most candidates have around 136 UCAS points (or equivalent, or 320 UCAS points under the old system), and are on course for (or already have) at least a 2:1 in their discipline. That said, if you can demonstrate that you’re a strong match for us in your career motivations, we do consider candidates who don’t quite meet these requirements.

That’s because for us, a solid academic performance isn’t everything. We’re also looking for something more. Here are the key competencies we test for:

Commercial awareness

You understand global commercial issues, and you can see how the smallest news headline might affect big businesses.

Ambition

You’re driven. You never give up, and you pursue every opportunity wholeheartedly, actively seeking success at every turn.

Collegiality

You form relationships that last, because you enjoy working with all kinds of colleagues – and they with you.

Analytical skills

Your logical reasoning helps you tackle any problem, big or small.

Commitment

You’re a meticulous planner and organiser. Circumstances might change, but you stay prepared and on track to deliver – no matter the task at hand.

Challenge

You think creatively, you communicate clearly, and you don’t settle for what’s always been done if there’s a better way forward.

The assessment process

We want things to be simple, so whether you’re applying for a training contract or a vacation scheme, the application process stages are the same.

The only difference is if you’re applying for open days or for the spring insight scheme. For open days, you’ll only need to complete an online application form, and for the spring insight scheme, it’s an online application form, judgement test and video interview.

What’s particularly important to note here is our support for candidates with a disability: if you need any special arrangements during your application process, all you have to do is contact us (recruitment@simmons-simmons.com) and we’ll do our best to help meet your needs.

Stage 1: Online application form and online judgement test

Our online application form is designed to allow us to find out more about you. We’ll ask you about your academics, work experience, interests and activities.

You’ll be asked to create an online account with cvMail, so you’ll have the opportunity to save your work and review before submitting it.

Once you’ve submitted your application, you’ll then be asked to complete an online judgement test. In it, you’ll find a series of real life scenarios with multiple-choice options. The point here is to see if you’re a good fit for us.

Once we’ve received both your application and your online judgement test we’ll consider both carefully, and get back to you as soon as possible to let you know if you’ve been successful at this point.

Stage 2: Online ability tests and video interview

Our online logical and verbal reasoning ability tests are completed online. Before the start of each test, you’ll have the chance to complete a practice question to familiarise yourself with the format. Free practice tests are also available at www.trytalentq.com if you’d like to have a go before completing the real thing. You may be re-tested if invited through to final assessment.

After you’ve finished your online ability tests, you'll then complete a short video interview. You'll be able to complete this in your own time and will be asked a number of motivational questions.

If you’re successful at this stage, you’ll be invited in to complete a final assessment at our CityPoint offices in London.

Stage 3: Assessment centre

Your final assessment will take place at our CityPoint offices in London, where you’ll take part in our assessment centre. You’ll meet our colleagues, as well as meeting the applicants who could be in your intake, and we’ll work out if we’re the right fit for each other. It’s not about tripping you up but about helping you succeed, and along the way, you’ll complete a few tasks for us:

  • Document exercise and competency interview
  • Written exercise
  • Interactive exercise

This is the final stage, so if you’ve made it this far, we’ll be in touch as soon as we can to offer feedback and to let you know if you’ve been successful in your application.
